Cylinder Liners in Internal Combustion Engines: What Are They and What Do They Do?

What is a Cylinder Liner?

A cylinder liner is an important part of an internal combustion engine that is located in the engine block and forms the surface on which the pistons move. Designed to withstand harsh operating conditions such as wear, temperature and pressure, this liner works as a part of the engine block. It limits the area where the combustion process takes place during the up-and-down movement of the piston.

Cylinder liners are usually made of high-strength materials (e.g. cast iron, alloy steel or composite materials) and directly affect the performance of the engine. In addition, replacing the liner in case of damage or wear makes engine repairs easier and extends the life of the engine.

Functions of Cylinder Liners

Protection Against Wear:
Protects the engine block against friction that occurs during the movement of the piston.
The surface it serves is durable and allows the piston rings to move smoothly.

Heat Management:
Prevents the engine from overheating by removing the high temperature that occurs during combustion from the engine block.
Water cylinder liners provide more effective heat management by coming into direct contact with the coolant.
Sealing:

Protects the compression and combustion chamber during piston movement, thus reducing power loss prevents.

Providing a Precise Surface:

The inner surface of the cylinder is precisely machined for the smooth and efficient movement of the piston.
Minimizes friction, reduces engine energy loss and increases efficiency.

Facilitating Engine Repair:
Liners protect the engine block from wear. In the event of wear, only the cylinder liner is replaced, allowing the engine block to be reused.
